Comparing Catheters

Our health experts have conducted an in depth catheter comparison document to assist you in finding the right product for your needs.

But first, what is a catheter?

A catheter is a hollow flexible tube inserted into your bladder allowing your urine to drain freely. Urinary retention is the body’s inability to completely empty the bladder after urination. The most common reason for insertion of a urinary catheter is to relieve urinary retention.

How do we compare catheters?

There are different types of catheters which are suitable for different individuals based on their needs, gender and level of comfort when it comes to insertion.

When we compare catheters, it is important to keep their differences in mind.

Below we outline and compare four different catheter types and how they are used.

  1. Intermittent catheters –  short term use. Designed to be easily inserted and can be used to catherise up to six times daily.
  2. Indwelling catheters – short term indwelling catheters should be used when bladder drainage is required for up to 14 days.
  3. Suprapubic catheters – First insertion of this catheter type is an invasive procedure as catheter requires access to the bladder through the abdomen.
  4. Condom drainage / external catheter – this is a urine drainage system for men and can be used effectively to prevent bladder accidents.
