Travellers Aid

Travelling for people with disability can be challenging. And while the NDIS encourages independence and choice and control, sometimes we just need a little help. That’s where organisations like Travellers Aid come in. But who are Travellers Aid and what sort of services do they offer? Read on to learn more.

Who are Travellers Aid?

Travellers Aid has a long history. In fact, the earliest iteration of the service launched in 1916. But it looked very different back then.

Originally called the Travellers Aid Society of Victoria, the organisation was formed during a time of great social change. Their mission at the time was to offer ‘support and protection to women and girls in Melbourne’.

However, over the decades, they expanded their remit to include migrants, international students and by the 1970s they were offering their services to men. It wasn’t until 1989 that the organisation began to offer disability specific services.

Meanwhile, today they provide a range of services for travellers. From a free buggy service to companion services for those that need just a little extra help travelling around Melbourne and the surrounding areas. They also offer luggage storage and crisis supports.

How can Travellers Aid help you?
